A Simple Plan: Epoxy

The Importance of Epoxy Floor Coatings

Epoxy formulations have been an important aspect of the building industry for the past many years now. For floor applications, epoxy floor coatings specifically are commonly used, and it is important to know about some facts of this important coating material.

The key behind high performing epoxy coatings are the epoxy resins which form as the core materials in formulating quality epoxy based primers, top coats and sealants. The epoxy floor coatings will perform well on floor finishes, as protective coats, as fire retardants, as a waterproofing coat, and contribute to damage resistance paints, all because of these resins.
Be informed that epoxy coatings can be applied in many types of surface, such as concrete, steel and other surfaces. Depending on the kind of material used for the substrate, specific coating system may be dictated, but not in the case of epoxy floor coatings where application is possible in nearly all kinds of surfaces.

Epoxy resin molecules are almost not penetrable because its compounds of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin organochlorine/epoxide are cross linked, and the chemistry leads to a floor coating that is highly water, chemical or air intrusion resistance, thereby the coating has the ability to prevent corrosion in metal or concrete surfaces.

Other common coating systems are developed together with epoxy, like epoxy amine systems, epoxy sulfide systems, aliphatic epoxy systems and hybrid epoxy systems, that when combined with epoxies, you can obtain the glossy appearance of surface, and there is better adhesion and curing time, thus an increased performance of the material. Alkyds and acrylics can also combine well with the epoxy coating systems to further improve its performance.

Manufacturing plants, warehouse floors, heavy machinery garages, and airplane hangars are often exposed to damage inducing factors, and this is why epoxy floor coatings are applied to these floors because of the material’s resistance to these damages.

Know that epoxy coatings have high adhesive properties, like 1.5 thousand pounds of adhesive power for every inch of flooring, thus translating to floors that can remain solid and in good condition for a long time even if under high physical loads.

Epoxy floor coatings contain pigments that will expand fast when there is exposure to heat, making the coatings good fire retardants. As the pigments expand, it serves as a barrier protection that lasts long enough until the fire is put off.

Note that epoxy floor coatings are effective in several surfaces because of its water borne, high solids or solvent borne properties.

Epoxy floor coatings then, because of its inherent chemical properties, have become a versatile and high performing coatings that are sought after to meet any kind of requirements for coating applications.
